Heavy Rains Cause Eureka's Own Niagra Falls

With all the recent rains we have had the soil has been saturated. So with last weeks 5 in down pour the runoff was tremoundous. This caused the level of Eureka Lake to raise dramiaticly. The volume of water coming over the falls was incredible and was a sight to behold. The pictures above show the falls with normal water flow, then one shows the falls at flood stage. You can match up the small trees at the edge of the cliff in both pictures to get an idea of really how much water there is. There are plans to remove some of the view obstructing trees this fall so that the falls can be seen from the road again.

Outdoor Adventures at Lake Eureka

Lake Eureka is a public use area with many outdoor places open to the public. It has some beautiful scenery but there are also areas where it would be easy to be injured. The falls area is a popular spot but it has areas with rock ledges that are over 30 to 40 ft in elevation with the landing at the bottom on jagged rocks. We often see children standing a little to close to the edge for our comfort and would like to ask parents to watch them closely. Lake Eureka also has one of the best crops of Poison Ivy that ever grew on the planet. A person can't walk 5ft in the woods without encountering the noxious weed.   . . .

A public restroom can be found at the South boat ramp area next to the swimming beach. A city boating permit is required if you are engaged in any activity other than fishing. If you are ONLY fishing, you do not need a city boating permit as the city participates in the CFAP program with the State of Kansas. This . . .
